I believe that the origin of theatre lies both within Else's Theory of Spontaneous Generation and the Theory of Ritual, which state, respectively, that theatre was created through storytelling and that theatre was created as a sort of decendent of primitive rites and religious ceremonies. For me, these theories are able to work in tandem as storytelling has often been used in addition to religous ceremonies, often seen in Ancient Greece, when festivals and rituals would be planned in adherence with Greek mythology, which was often spread way of word and passed down through stories.
